SOUTHERN SECTION TRACK AND FIELD PRELIMINARIES : Woodbridge Relay Team Leaves Its Mark

The Woodbridge girls’ 400-meter relay team continued to set county records at the Southern Section Division II preliminaries Saturday at UC Riverside.

Heaven Yoshino, Erin Stovall, Jackie Dix and Meisha Wilson-Duval posted a mark of 47.25 seconds to advance into next week’s finals as the top team.

“We just had safe passes all the way around and a great leg from each of the girls,” Warrior Coach George Varvas said.

Stovall had a successful day in the long jump, posting the top qualifying mark in the event, 19 feet 2 inches.

Stovall, the Sea View League champion in the long jump and 100 meters, also qualified in the 100 high hurdles (14.85) and the 100 (12.24).

Wilson-Duval won her heats in the 200 (25.45) and 400 (56.98) to advance to next week’s final.

Tustin sophomore Dominique Degrammont posted the fastest qualifying time in the 110 high hurdles (14.53).

“I hit the first hurdle and that threw me off a little bit,” said Degrammont, who also won his heat in the 300 intermediate hurdles (39.46).

Dana Hills sprinter Bryan Harrison won his qualifying heat of the 100 (10.63) and 200 (22.07), beating Moreno Valley Canyon Springs’ standout Bryan Howard.

Mission Viejo freshman Ashley Bethel advanced in the 100 high hurdles (14.45), long jump (17-8 3/4) and high jump (5-2) as well as running a leg on the qualifying 400 relay for the Diablos.

Trabuco Hills freshman Darnesha Griffith, the county long jump champion, posted the top qualifying mark in the triple jump (37 feet 5 1/2 inches). County athletes made up five of the nine qualifying spots in the boys’ 1,600, as Andy Morgan of Mission Viejo (4:22.03) and El Modena’s Don Kennedy (4:24.63) were heat winners and Martin Pennell of El Toro and Shahram DeZahd each ran 4:26.90. Mater Dei’s Matt Wickersham also ran in 4:22.98 to advance.
