HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Nix Goes No-No . . . Again

Monroe High’s Wayne Nix struck out 11, walked one, and hit a batter in a 6-0 Valley Pac-8 Conference no-hitter Tuesday at Van Nuys.

Nix (10-2) has pitched two no-hitters and two one-hitters in his last four games. His earned run average was 0.47 coming into the game.

Monroe (18-8, 14-3 in conference play) benefited from doubles by Alfredo Aleman, Josh Miranda and Phillip Allsup.

Van Nuys closed out its season at 5-20, 5-12.

Grant 7, Poly 4--Adam Frank’s three-run triple helped the host Lancers to six runs in the second inning in a Valley Pac-8 Conference upset.

Walter Rios (4-6) went the distance for Grant (7-17, 6-11), allowing five hits and no earned runs. Rios struck out only one, walked three and hit a batter.

The Parrots (19-6, 15-2) attempted a comeback in the seventh, scoring all four of their runs. Grant made three errors in the inning. Poly runners were stranded on first and second when the game ended.

Poly starter Tony Iovino, who transferred from Grant to Poly before the season, took the loss after being chased in the second.

The victory puts the Lancers in third place and looking for an at-large bid in the City Section playoffs. The Parrots have already qualified after winning the East Valley League.

Reseda 9, Canoga Park 5--Jason Segal had a home run and a double, and Alonzo Arreola had a double for Reseda (7-10, 7-10) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda. Kevin Fishman had a two-run triple for Canoga Park (5-12, 5-12).

Sylmar 9, North Hollywood 1--Chris Ruley knocked in two runs with two singles and a double for host Sylmar (18-7, 12-5) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Rafael Velazco (8-2) went six innings to earn the victory for the Spartans, allowing one run on six hits, striking out eight and walking one.

El Camino Real 13, Birmingham 4--Matt Cowie had a pair of triples and Marvin Jones belted his fifth home run as the visiting Conquistadores (17-8-1, 11-6) clinched the West Valley League championship. Mike Conn (7-2) scattered nine hits.

Kennedy 9, Cleveland 1--Kevin Serr had two hits--including a double--to drive in four runs for visiting Kennedy (22-4, 14-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

David Soto (6-1) went six innings to earn the victory, allowing one run on two hits, striking out four and walking one.

Nick Intenzo drove in one run with a double and also singled for the Golden Cougars, and Terrmel Sledge added four hits, scoring once.

Chatsworth 7, Taft 1--Fred Farzaneh allowed three hits, struck out six and walked two in leading the Chancelors (16-9, 11-6) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft. Tony Ardito knocked in a run with a triple in the first and another with a double in the sixth.

San Fernando 7, Granada Hills 6--Robert Tirado’s single drove in Javier Navarro in the bottom of the seventh to rally the Tigers (11-15, 5-12) from a five-run deficit in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando. Tirado finished with three hits and two runs batted.

The Highlanders (15-10, 9-8) scored three in the first and two in the second with Adrian Torres collecting two hits and two RBIs.

Eagle Rock 11, Verdugo Hills 0--Eagle Rock scored six times in the bottom of the first to chase Garrett Heiberger (0-2) in a Northern Conference game. Verdugo Hills finished 5-12, 1-8.

SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS

Antelope Valley 11, Burbank 6--Led by a two-run home run by Sean Douglass, the host Antelopes (9-14) sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs in the fourth inning of a Division III wild-card victory.

Freshman Chris Wurster had two hits and drove in two runs for Antelope Valley, which will face La Quinta in a first-round game Friday.

The Bulldogs (8-14) sent 10 batters to the plate during a four-run sixth, sparked by Freddy Sanchez’s leadoff home run.

Buckley 3, Claremont 2--T.J. Jackson’s solo home run in the sixth lifted the Griffins in a Division VI wild-card game at Claremont. Buckley will play at Viewpoint in the first round Friday.
