SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The bodies of two middle-aged women who had been shot to death were found at opposite ends of the San Gabriel Valley, within hours of each other on Saturday.

Kyong Sue Kim, 42, was found Saturday afternoon on Mt. Wilson Road in Angeles National Forest near La Canada Flintridge after a sightseer stopped his vehicle to enjoy the view, said Sgt. Rudy Ortega of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Several hours earlier, at 7 a.m., the body of Karen Kathleen Alexander, 43, was found near East Campus Drive in a rural area on the edge of the Cal Poly Pomona campus.

Kim was a resident of Los Angeles, Alexander lived in Pomona. Authorities have established no motives for the deaths and have no suspects in either case.

Investigators said they first thought the two crimes may have been connected because of the similiarity in the women’s ages and because both died of multiple gunshot wounds. But the authorities have since concluded that the slayings are unrelated, Ortega said.

Little was known about either victim.

Kim apparently had no relatives living in the Los Angeles area.

Alexander was neither a student nor a staff member at Cal Poly Pomona and has no known surviving relatives. Her death was the first homicide on the campus in 15 years, school officials said.
