San Gabriel Valley high school baseball teams begin first-round play in the Southern Section playoffs Friday.

Bishop Amat, The Times’ top-ranked team in the area at 23-3, plays host to Crespi.

* Three schools from the San Gabriel Valley competed in second-round matches of the Southern Section boys’ volleyball playoffs Tuesday night.

San Marino defeated St. Margaret’s, La Salle lost to at St. John Bosco, and Bosco Tech beat Paso Robles.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Three players from Pasadena City College were selected All-South Coast Conference in softball.

Outfielder Heidi Vandergrift, who batted .352, shortstop Marta Bugarin (.261) and designated hitter Cristina Martinez were selected to the team by conference coaches.

* John Arrambide, former baseball coach at Mt. San Antonio College, will be inducted into the state community college Athletic Hall of Fame on May 26 in Fresno.

Arrambide coached the Mounties from 1948 to 1964. He compiled a 301-176-1 record and won the 1964 state championship. Arrambide also coached football and basketball at Mt. SAC.

* Mt SAC’s baseball team had its season come to an end last weekend when the Mounties lost two games to Pierce in the Southern California regional of the state playoffs.

Citrus finished 20-16 and 13-14 in the Foothill Conference.

COLLEGES

La Verne University, the champion of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, plays conference runner-up Cal Lutheran Friday in the first game of a best-of-five series for the NCAA Division III West regional championship.

A single game will be played Friday, a doubleheader Saturday and a doubleheader, if necessary on Sunday.

The winner advances to the Division III World Series.

* Azusa Pacific’s baseball team is competing this week in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Far West regional at Lewiston, Ida.

Azusa Pacific, which entered the tournament 34-10 and ranked 14th in NAIA, is part of a field that also includes host Lewis & Clark State, Linfield (Ore.), Western Oregon State, Cal Baptist, Albertson (Ida.), Point Loma Nazarene and Willamette (Ore.).

Azusa Pacific beat Point Loma, 10-5, on Tuesday.

* Azusa Pacific’s softball team ended its season with two losses against Southern California College in the NAIA Far West regional.

Azusa Pacific finished 34-19. Six starters and the entire pitching staff return next season.

* Azusa Pacific will play host to the NAIA outdoor track and field championships May 25-28.

More than 800 athletes from about 100 schools will participate. Azusa Pacific has 22 men and 13 women competing in the meet.

* Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team finished 32-29 and 17-15 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

The Broncos were swept in a doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino and were eliminated from the race for a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Stacy Nuveman, St. Lucy’s--Nuveman, a junior who is one of the best hitters in the area, led the Regents to the Baseline League softball championship and into the Division III playoffs.

St. Lucy’s plays host to Savannah Friday in a first-round game.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Rocky Biddle, Long Beach State--Biddle, a freshman from Temple City High, struck out 14 for the third game in a row during a 2-0 victory over Nevada in the Big West Conference baseball tournament.

Long Beach finished second in the tournament and will likely draw an at-large berth in the 48-team NCAA tournament that begins May 25.

MISCELLANY

A basketball coaches clinic featuring Fresno State’s Jerry Tarkanian, Utah’s Rick Majerus, Long Beach State’s Seth Greenberg, Concordia’s Greg Marshall and Caltech’s Gene Victor will be staged Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer College. * A youth football coaching clinic, featuring presentations by some of the most successful high school coaches in Southern California, will be staged July 15-16 in Pasadena. * The 29th annual Mt. Wilson Trail Run will be staged May 27 beginning in Sierra Madre. The 8.6-mile race features an elevation gain of almost 2,100 feet. Entry is limited to 300 competitors. Information: (818) 355-2355.

* The 26th annual Don Edwards golf tournament, sponsored by the Citrus College athletic department, will be played June 5 at Via Verde Country Club in San Dimas.
