COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Miami Gets Six in Eighth, Tops Long Beach

Miami scored six runs in the eighth inning to overtake Long Beach State and win, 6-4, in a baseball game Friday at Blair Field.

Jeff Tagliaferri hit an eighth inning home run for the 49ers, but Long Beach was unable to put together any offense in the ninth inning.

Freshman Rocky Biddle, who struck out seven batters, took the loss for the 49ers.

The three-game series is tied at 1-1 with the final game to be played this afternoon at Blair Field.

In NCAA Division III golf championships:

Tanaka finishes 72nd--Chapman senior Yasu Tanaka shot 82 and 84, his worst two rounds of the season, to finish at 245 for three rounds in the rain-shortened tournament at Hulman Links Golf Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Tanaka finished 27 shots behind individual champion Ryan Jenkins of Methodist (N.C.). Methodist defended its title, winning with 899 strokes. Otterbein College was second at 917. UC San Diego was fourth (926).

In Pacific 10 baseball:

Trojans win Pac 10--Chad Moeller went four for four, driving in two runs to help USC beat Washington State, 4-0, and win the Pacific 10 title.

Ben Tucker (6-2) blanked the Cougars (28-30) on eight hits, with six strikeouts, for 7 2/3 innings. The Trojans took the best-of-three series, 2-0, and earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I tournament.

Moeller hit a solo homer in the fourth and singled home a run in a two-run seventh. Paul Cruz doubled home a run in the eighth inning to cap the scoring for the Trojans (41-18).
