SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Following the nostalgic trend set by the NFL and Major League Baseball, Fremont High Coach Steve Lang reached back to the past to find uniforms for his Fremont High track team and its star long jumper, Clarence Scott.

Lang discovered uniforms from the early 1970s, red and black with the letter F on a pair of wings emblazoned across the chest. The team wore them for the Southeastern Conference finals and will wear them again for the City Section finals Thursday at Birmingham High.

Scott might as well have had wings on his feet as he broke records in the long jump and 200 meters at the City Section semifinals.

The junior extended his nation-leading mark in the long jump to 25 feet 4 1/2 inches and clocked 21.29 seconds in the 200 for the top qualifying marks in both events.

Scott’s mark in the long jump broke the 1978 school record of 25-4 set by Donnie Butler. Scott took only two of his four attempts, eclipsing his previous best of 24-6 3/4 set in winning the Arcadia/Foot Locker Invitational in April on both tries. He jumped 25-3 on his first attempt and nearly jumped out of the pit on his second try.

“I ran down the runway and it was like I didn’t want to come down,” Scott said.

In the 200, Scott held a three-meter lead over Charles Lee of Cleveland and held on for a 0.15-second victory. Scott--whose time dipped under Kory Jones’ school record of 21.41 set at the 1993 state meet--and Lee (21.44) had the top two qualifying marks.

Scott came back to anchor the 1,600-meter relay team of Jermaine Lovelace, Cameron Carson and Korrey Taylor with a 47.6 leg to the No. 3 qualifying mark of 3:21.02. Earlier, the four combined to run 42.21 to advance to the finals.

Keisha Griffis of Washington, the two-time defending champion in the 300-meter low hurdles, had the fastest marks in the 100 and 300 hurdles, running 15.23 and 45.79.

The top nine in each event in the semifinals at Birmingham advanced to the finals. Other top qualifiers included Bobby Jones of Manual Arts in the 400 (48.29), Manuel Lopez of Belmont in the 1,600 (4:29.41) and Betty Butler of Dorsey in the girls’ 800 (2:24.92).
