HOLLYWOOD : Metro Rail Finishes Tunneling at Troubled Site

Share

Subway tunneling came to an end in Hollywood on Wednesday, reaching the foot of the Santa Monica Mountains.

“Hallelujah!” Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg sang, breaking into a rendition of George Frideric Handel’s chorus. She represents the area on the Los Angeles City Council

The tunnels will be linked to the San Fernando Valley in 1997 as machines bore south through the mountains.

“This is a significant milestone in the Metro Rail project,” said John J. Adams, acting executive officer of construction for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He called the Hollywood tunnels “our greatest engineering challenge to date.”

Tunneling was shut down for nearly five months and federal funding was temporarily cut off after the ground along Hollywood Boulevard sank as much as 10 inches. The project has left behind bitter feelings and hundreds of claims and lawsuits from property owners alleging damage from the tunneling.
