She had stomach flu Wednesday and threw up after her race in the Southern Section Masters Meet on Friday night at Cerritos College, but there was nothing wrong with Nicole Campbell of Ventura High during the girls’ 800 meters as she posted a come-from behind victory for the second week in a row.

The Cougar sophomore ran down Sabrina Caplis of Santa Ana Foothill in the final 100 meters of last week’s Division II race of the Southern Section divisional championships, but Friday’s fourth-to-first surge in the final straightaway came against a much stronger field.

“I just wanted to finish in the top three,” Campbell said after running a personal best and a region-leading time of 2 minutes 14.01 seconds.

“I didn’t really think about winning until I was sure I had the top three and then I just gave it everything I had.”

Campbell attributed all the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races she ran during the regular season with giving her supreme confidence in her final kick.

Amy Skieresz of Agoura would like to be able to say the same thing about Courtney Pugmire of Anaheim Esperanza.

Skieresz, who finished second to Pugmire in both the 1,600 and 3,200 in last week’s Division I championships, dropped the 1,600 earlier this week to focus all her energy on the 3,200 and it resulted in a school record of 10:16.42 on Friday.

The only problem was that Pugmire out-kicked her to record a national-leading 10:14.48 and move to sixth place on the all-time state list.

Skieresz’ time destroyed her previous personal best of 10:31.60 at the Arcadia Invitational in April and moved her to 11th on the all-time state list and to third on the all-time region list.

Campbell and Skieresz recorded two of nine region-leading marks in the meet in which the top five finishers in each event advanced to the State championships at Cerritos on June 2-3.

The Palmdale girls’ 1,600 relay team of Sinead Younge, Monique Nolan, Kadrina Coffee and Edneisha Curry finished second with a time of 3:48.61, third on the all-time region list, and also advanced.

Andrea Wasden of Rio Mesa moved to seventh on the all-time region list with a fourth-place time of 43.73 in the 300 low hurdles. She was fifth in the 100 highs in 14.58.

Jeff Fischer of Thousand Oaks finished second in the 3,200 in 9:08.16.
