SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The La Canada High softball team sure knows to make the most of its hits.

The Spartans parlayed a fourth-inning double by Kara Campbell and an infield single by Tricia Walton into two runs and Lindsay Parker pitched her way out of a sixth-inning jam in a 2-0 victory over San Bernardino Cajon in the Division IV final Friday night at Mayfair Park.

La Canada (26-3) managed only three hits in its last two games, but with Parker pitching, only minimal offense is needed.

La Canada’s break came in the fourth when Cajon catcher Sarah De Simone threw the ball into left field trying to nail Campbell at third on a double steal.

Campbell and Walton both scored on the play.

The only other inning in which La Canada posed anything resembling a threat was the second. Parker walked with one out but pinch-runner Stephanie Tenerelli was called out for interference on a popup by Sunny Park to end the inning.

Losing pitcher Lana Maran (22-2), a junior, struck out 13 and walked one.

Parker had a no-hitter until the sixth, when Cajon (26-5) mounted its only threat.

De Simone hit a sharp grounder down the third-base line that Shannon Smith gloved but could not make a play on.

After a wild pitch, Maran drilled an infield single off Parker’s glove, putting Cajon runners at the corners with two out.

But as she has done all season, Parker bore down, striking out Tiffany Clark to end the inning.

“That’s the type of pitcher she is,” said Coach Tom Parker, who is Lindsay’s father. “She gets us into some jams but when she does she gets us out. We’ve counted on that all season.”

By upsetting Cajon, which was the top-seeded team in Division IV, La Canada avenged last season’s loss in the final to Santa Maria St. Joseph.

“This is a great way to end my career,” Lindsay said. “I definitely felt this game would be decided on errors and I’m glad it went our way.”

Parker (25-3), who will attend Fresno State, struck out 13 and walked one. The right-hander finished the season with 374 strikeouts in 198 innings.
