JUNE MISCHIEF: Chalk it up to end-of-the-school-year high jinks. . . . Youths in Thousand Oaks are lobbing--of all things-- candy at parked cars . . . and doing big damage (B4). Meanwhile, seniors at a private high school in Ventura went overboard with a year-end celebration, vandalizing St. Bonaventure High (B1). . . . The pranks are expected to reach a peak as graduations approach in the next few weeks. At Moorpark High School, officials are hoping for something less elaborate than the stunt pulled by last year’s seniors, who hoisted a ’63 Chevy to the roof of a campus building.

CANINE HOTSHOT: Lucy the Labrador put on an impressive show in Oxnard to demonstrate her arson-sniffing skills (B1). . . . Lucy, who specializes in investigating the source of suspicious fires, was trained by new Oxnard Fire Chief Randy Coggan. The former Ventura County fire chief also trained another sleuthing Labrador: Buddy, who plies his trade for the County Fire Department.

GOOD DEEDS: Robert Addison has been helping the Boys & Girls Club of Ventura since he moved to the city in 1951. . . . Now, club officials plan to name a youth center on North Olive Street in his honor this month. Addison, his wife, Janet, and their two sons lived in South Africa for years. On their return to the United States, they chose Ventura for its “climate and good economic possibilities,” said Addison, 84. These days, he’s added another cause to his list: saving the county library system. “We need these things for our youths.”

TIME OFF: Who wouldn’t want to work just four days a week? . . . A third of the county’s employees have Fridays off, but crunching the 40-hour week into a four-day span hasn’t done enough to help the county meet its pollution goals (B1). . . . The county, which started the program two years ago, now is looking for other ways to cut air pollution to meet federal standards that go into effect in 1997.
