50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle

Irvine, Jr.

Although her 50- and 100-yard freestyle times at the Southern Section Division I finals in May were not as fast as her Division II winning times of last year, she still won the two events she dominated throughout the season.

200 Freestyle

El Dorado, Jr.

Came on strong late in the season to post county’s fastest time of 1:49.71. Finished second at the Southern Section Division I finals.

200 Individual Medley

Mission Viejo, Sr.

Seeded first after the Southern Section preliminaries, she finished fourth at the Division I finals. Her time of 2:05.82 was the best in the county.

* CATHY CARONE

100 Butterfly

Capistrano Valley, Sr.

Dominated the event and posted the fastest time in the county at 58.07 seconds. However, stumbled in section Division I finals and finished fifth.

* ALISON MIJARES

500 Freestyle

Marina, Sr.

No county swimmer in any division reached the section finals in this event, but Mijares had the county’s fastest time of the year at 5:03.92.

* GIANA JOHNSON

100 Backstroke

Laguna Hills, Sr.

Her county-best time of 57.77 was achieved at the section Division II finals, where she finished second. She also won the Division II 200 free.

* AMBER WINES

100 Breaststroke

Santa Ana Valley, Jr.

Set records at the Foothill Swim Games and the Division I finals, where her first-place finish in 1:03.20 broke an 11-year-old section mark.

Throughout the year they held off the best in the county. At the Division I finals, they proved they were the best in the Southern Section by finishing first in 1:50.79.

Capistrano Valley

Their county-best time of 3:36.00 helped the Cougars finish third--the highest place achieved by any county team--at the Southern Section Division I finals.

With the Jo sisters as their foundation, the Hawks posted the county’s fastest 200 freestyle relay time. They finished in 1:40.07 at the Division I finals for third place.

Capistrano Valley, Sr.

Defeated rival Sandy Zubrin of Corona del Mar by a slim 13 points to win the Southern Section Division I diving championship with 527 points.

Fountain Valley

Her first year’s highlights were Barons’ second place in Division I finals and firsts at Southern Section Relays and Foothill Swim Games.

Melissa Schutz

Newport Harbor, Sr.

Time: 24.12. Defeated Irvine’s Wendy O’Brien to finish first at Sea View League finals; finished fourth at Division I finals.

Katie Lowes

El Toro, Jr.

Time: 51.54. Though the 200 free is her best event, she was third at the Division I finals and second at Sea View League finals. *

200 freestyle

Giana Johnson

Laguna Hills, Sr.

Time: 1:52.46. Finished first at Division II finals and had county’s second-fastest time of season. Led Laguna Hills to fifth place. *

Katie Cramm

Santa Margarita, So.

Time: 5:04.35. One of the county’s fastest, she took first at the Sea View League finals and is expected to dominate next year.

Laura Tucker

Huntington Beach, So.

Time: 58.13. Posted her season’s best mark with third-place finish at Division I finals; finished first at Sunset League finals.

Jessamyn Miller

Mater Dei, Fr.

Time: 1:03.58. Will continue to present a challenge to Amber Wines, to whom she finished runner-up at the Division I finals.

Chrissy Motschman

Fountain Valley, So.

Time: 58.59. One of the Barons’ key relay swimmers, her season’s best was good for sixth place at the Section Division I finals.

San Clemente, Sr.

Time: 2:07.97. Was sixth at Division I finals with her fastest swim of the year; second to Murphy at South Coast League finals.

Time: 1:40.93. Cheryl Murphy (Sr.), Christina Murphy (Fr.), Christina Rhee (Sr.), Katie Feeney (Sr.). Came on strong to post their best time of the season at the section Division I finals, where they finished fifth; took first place at South Coast League finals.

Time: 1:51.48. Summir Case (So.), Katie Simmons (Jr.), Keri Wilson (Jr.) and Katie Lowes (Jr.). Probably would have finished first at the section Division I finals if they hadn’t been disqualified for a false start; took first place at Sea View League finals.

Corona del Mar, Sr.

Score: 513. Was Division II champion last year and finished second in Division I this year. Dominated Sea View League finals.
