Indiana Fined $30,000 for Knight’s Outburst

The NCAA has reprimanded Bob Knight and fined Indiana University $30,000 for the coach’s postgame outburst during the NCAA tournament in March.

Knight, miffed that an NCAA media liaison erroneously said he would not attend the news conference, lashed out at him after the Hoosiers’ 65-60 first-round loss to Missouri.

Knight was unavailable for comment. Indiana Athletic Director Clarence Doninger said Tuesday night the sanctions were inappropriate but the university would not appeal.

“Coach Knight is still considering his own administrative and other legal options,” Doninger said.

Tennis

Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe playing mixed doubles at Wimbledon?

Navratilova, already assured of her 23rd consecutive appearance at the championships with a wild-card entry to play doubles with Steffi Graf in addition to working as a television commentator during the June 26-July 9 championships, said she also wants to play mixed doubles.

“Maybe with McEnroe,” the nine-time Wimbledon singles champion told a news conference in her native Prague, Czech Republic. “But, he also is a commentator, so he doesn’t know whether he will play either.”

Earlier, Navratilova accused McEnroe of “irresponsible journalism” for his remarks during the NBC telecast of the French Open final Sunday during which he said Navratilova had been told to lose her July 29 exhibition with Monica Seles, which will be televised on CBS.

Navratilova and McEnroe are both retired from their tours and have never played together.

Top-seeded Dutchman Richard Krajicek needed a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Shuzo Matsuoka of Japan, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), in the Ordina Open grass-court championships in Rosmalen, Netherlands. . . . Defending champion Lori McNeil fell behind, 4-1, but recovered to beat Slovenia’s Tina Krizan, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the third round of the DFS Classic grass-court women’s tournament in Birmingham, England. . . . Defending champion Todd Martin, who beat Pete Sampras in last year’s final, beat Jan Apell of Sweden, 6-3, 6-4, in the Queen’s Club grass-court tournament in London. . . . Spain’s Alberto Berasategui needed three sets to defeat Italy’s Stefano Pescosolido, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, in the opening round of the Maia Open tournament in Oporto, Portugal.

Hockey

The Kings signed Czech defenseman Jan Vopat to a three-year contract. Vopat, 22, was acquired in May from Hartford for a fourth-round draft choice in the NHL entry draft.

John Muckler stepped down as coach of the Buffalo Sabres and signed a three-year deal to remain general manager.

Miscellany

Former world champion Michael Nunn began his comeback with a unanimous 10-round decision over Earl Butler in a super-middleweight bout at Moline, Ill.

It was the first time since 1990 that Nunn (44-3) had fought with trainer Joe Goossen in his corner.

The Big 12 approved a football playoff game between the North and South division champions that will bring at least $550,000 to each school in the new league.

Juan Antonio Samaranch moved closer to another four-year term as president of the International Olympic Committee when his executive board took the first step toward changing the age-limit rule in Budapest, Hungary. Samaranch, the IOC president since 1980, reaches the mandatory retirement age of 75 next month. Under the Olympic Charter, he would have to step down at the end of his term, in 1997.

Bob Bass has shelved his retirement plans and was introduced as the Charlotte Hornets’ new vice president of basketball operations. Bass left the San Antonio Spurs last year after two decades as a coach and executive.

The Seattle Seahawks signed free agent running back Steve Broussard.

University of Utah basketball players Brandon Jessie and Andre Miller have been charged with misdemeanor retail theft in connection with a June 2 shoplifting incident in Salt Lake City.
