NCAA, Don’t Mess With West Coast Baseball
- Share via
I was surprised to see the executive director of the NCAA, Cedric Dempsey, show his face at the College World Series after that august body stiffed the West Coast teams in general and the champions in particular.
Of a total of only seven Western teams in the tournament, four got shoved into one regional at Fresno, and Cal State Fullerton, the No. 1 team in the nation, was sent 2,000 miles to Baton Rouge, La.
All’s well that ends well with USC fighting past three West Coast teams, and Stanford and Fullerton winning other regionals. CBS’ powder-puff roving reporter should have grilled Mr. Dempsey with two Southern California powers in the final but chose to gush about home runs instead. Shame on CBS. Shame on the NCAA tournament committee. And rosebuds to the Titans’ triumph over all comers.
