Fire swept through a Newbury Park house Monday, causing an estimated $90,000 in damage, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

The blaze started shortly after 5 p.m. in the garage of the house in the 600 block of Evergreen Avenue and quickly spread throughout the structure, authorities said.

A neighbor, who was driving by at the time, said the fire began when a car in the garage exploded.

“I have no idea what made the car explode,” said Shannon Adams, who lives nearby. “The garage was opened, the car was on fire and flames were going everywhere, including the trees on the street.”

Adams said she got out of her car and ran toward the burning house, urging neighbors to call 911. She said one man went to the door and helped a woman leave the house.

Fire officials said the woman, whose identity was not available late Monday, suffered mild smoke inhalation.

The fire caused an estimated $60,000 in damage to the structure and $30,000 to its contents.

An investigation was continuing.
