SUMMER BASKETBALL / SEAN WATERS : Westchester Star Considers Move to Central City Team : Danny Walker Working Out With Fremont

Danny Walker, two-time City Section 4-A Division all-star, is thinking about transferring from Westchester High, where he has been a starting guard for the past two seasons.

Walker, who lives in the Fremont attendance area, played with the Pathfinders in a scrimmage against Dorsey on Wednesday. Walker is close friends with Pathfinder point guard Dony Wilcher, also an All-City player.

Contacted Thursday, Fremont Coach Sam Sullivan said that Walker is still weighing his options, but Sullivan hopes that the 5-10 senior first settles his differences with Westchester Coach Ed Azzam.

“I won’t do anything to help Walker transfer until I talk with Azzam,” Sullivan said. “He’s been around as long as I have and I have a lot of respect for him. I know the kid had a big disagreement with his head coach and there is a lot of pride involved.”

Walker could not be reached for comment.

The 6-foot shooting guard, who averaged 17.6 points a game, also has been long rumored to be headed for Crenshaw, the three-time defending City 4-A champions. Walker and Wilcher are considered two of the top 10 players in Southern California, according to Bob Gibbons, publisher for Lenoir, N.C.-based All Star Sports Publication.

The addition of Walker to either Fremont’s or Crenshaw’s backcourt would instantly make that school a favorite to win a City championship and a strong contender for a State Division I title.

When contacted during the Watts Summer Games, Azzam said that Walker, 6-1 point guard Jason Hart and 6-2 forward Tyrus Reese were not playing for Azzam’s summer team, the Comets. Azzam said he expects all three players to transfer to other schools.

Last season, Crenshaw beat Westchester, 73-59, in a City 4-A semifinal game.

“I don’t want to talk about those three players,” Azzam said. “I only want to talk about the players on my team.”

Hart has been playing for Inglewood’s summer team.
