LEGION ROUNDUP : Eighth Is Enough for West Hills

Chris Martinez singled home Scott Schubeck with one out in the eighth inning to give West Hills a 6-5 victory over Woodland Hills East in an American Legion District 20 baseball game Wednesday at Chaminade High.

Trailing, 5-4, after 6 1/2 innings, West Hills (14-1, 14-1 in district play) tied the score, 5-5, when Kevin Lohman doubled home Martinez with none out in the seventh.

Shawn Villalobos’ grand slam gave Woodland Hills East a 4-3 lead in the fourth and East (7-8, 7-8) extended its lead to 5-3 in the fifth.

West Hills got to within 5-4 on Ryan Hamill’s two-out, run-scoring single in the fifth.

It was the fifth victory in a row for West Hills.

In other District 20 games:

Newhall-Santa Clarita 7, Panorama City 2--Chris Baker pitched a seven-hitter and struck out 10 for Newhall-Santa Clarita at Canyon High.

Baker (7-0) pitched Newhall-Santa Clarita (15-1, 15-1) to its eighth consecutive victory.

Aaron Dean and Eric Horvat each had two hits for Newhall-Santa Clarita.

Van Nuys East 8, Verdugo Hills 3--Chris Cross (3-1) scattered seven hits, struck out four and walked four for Van Nuys East at Notre Dame High.

Sean Hanrahan had two hits and two runs batted in, and George Piedra added two hits and two runs for Van Nuys East (9-6, 9-6), which has won four consecutive games.

Encino 8, Studio City 4--Jason Miller (2-1) pitched a five-hitter, struck out seven and gave up two earned runs for Encino at Valley College.

Mike Turner had two doubles and two RBIs for Encino (10-8, 8-7).

Rafael Velazco had two hits--including a double--and an RBI for Studio City (3-10, 3-10).

Antelope Valley North 10, Antelope Valley South 0--Paul Vallet threw a three-hitter and walked two for Antelope Valley North at Antelope Valley High.

Matt Creighton was three for four and scored three runs for Antelope Valley North (5-10, 5-10). Allen Cameron added two hits and three runs, and Ryan Martinez and Bryan Richardson each had two hits.

Las Virgenes 6, North Hollywood West 0--Jared Sandler (1-1) allowed two hits, struck out eight and walked two for Las Virgenes (6-7-1, 6-7-1) game at North Hollywood High.

Sandler also had three hits and four RBIs for Las Virgenes, which snapped the five-game winning streak of North Hollywood West (6-10, 6-10).
