AMERICAN LEGION ROUNDUP : North Beats Central With 2-by-4

Four players each had two hits for Valley North in an 11-9 upset of Central Valley in a District 20 baseball game Wednesday at Chatsworth High.

Ray Daryabigi, Danny Phillips, Micah Berger and Frank Dipoma each had two hits for Valley North (10-7), which is on the bubble for one of the final spots in the eight-team district playoffs.

Junior Brignac led Central Valley (14-4) with three hits. Jared Penwarden had two hits, including a three-run triple.

Oscar Boganegra (4-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings to pick up the victory and Andrew Silver finished the game, recording his first save.

In other Distict 20 games:

West Hills 4, Las Virgenes 1--Scott Shubeck relieved Brandon Gray, who was injured in the first inning, and finished off the victory at Chaminade High.

West Hills (17-2) clinched at least a share of the Western Division title.

Sepulveda 7, Studio City 6--Evan Holloway had three hits and two runs batted in for Sepulveda (12-7) at Sylmar High.

Clemente Ortega added two hits and three RBIs for Sepulveda, which has a one-game lead in the the Southern Division.

A.J. Palma had a double, a triple and two runs for Studio City (5-12).

Van Nuys Eat 6, Sunland-Tujunga 2--Mike Acosta had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs for Van Nuys East (12-6) at Notre Dame High.

Van Nuys East won its seventh consecutive game.

Steve Maitland added two hits and scored three runs for Van Nuys East, which gave up just four hits.

Verdugo Hills 3, Valley South 1--Dave Gantt pitched a five-hitter and struck out six for Verdugo Hills at Birmingham High.

Verdugo Hills (13-6), which leads the Eastern Division by one-half game over Van Nuys East, had only three hits against Taiki Yamaoka (4-4), but scored twice in the fourth on two walks, a single and a groundout.

Fernando Centeno had two hits for three for Valley South (11-8).

Encino 6, Panorama City 1--Jon Cuccias pitched a five-hitter, striking out nine, for Encino (10-8) at Valley College.

Newhall 9, Granada Hills East 3--Brian Eggleston and Aaron Dean each had two hits and Eric Horvat hit his third home run for Newhall (18-1) at Kennedy High.

Woodland Hills East 2, Woodland Hills West 1--Justin Collins pitched a three-hitter for East (11-7-1) at Taft High.

Brian Menkin singled home the go-ahead run in the fifth inning.

Palmdale 11, Antelope Valley South 8--Palmdale scored five runs in the top of the seventh to win at Antelope Valley High.

Shad Martin had four hits and scored twice for Palmdale (9-8).

Jeremy Hendrickson had three hits and Jason Elizondo, Vince Haecker and Jeff Langham each had two for Antelope Valley South (9-10).

North Hollywood West 8, Van Nuys West 3--Mychel Ingram doubled, tripled and scored three runs for North Hollywood West (8-11) at North Hollywood High.

Dennis Bent, who gave up one run in four innings, picked up his fourth consecutive victory.
