Festival Will Get Off to Early Start

Opening ceremonies for the U.S. Olympic Festival are at 6 p.m. tonight at Mile High Stadium in Denver, but action is set to start 12 hours earlier inside the Coors Events Center at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

That’s when the South and East volleyball teams will meet in the opening event of the 10-day, 37-sport competition. On the South team are Bill Harris, a 6-foot-6 opposite hitter from La Canada, and Curt Vaughan, a 6-4 setter from Ventura.

Football

Antelope Valley, defending Southern Section Division II champion, is ranked fourth in the state in Cal-Hi Sports’ preseason poll. Hart is seventh, Sylmar 11th.

Tennis

Second-seeded Erin Boisclair of Agoura Hills advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Junior National Clay Court Championships in Memphis, Tenn., by defeating Diana Ospiano of Detroit, 6-4, 6-0, in the girls’ 18 division.
