Costa Mesa’s Oxley Wins Scratch Main Speedway Motorcycle Race

Brad Oxley of Costa Mesa won the four-lap scratch main event of the weekly speedway motorcycle racing program before 3,127 Friday night at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

Oxley beat out Riverside’s Steve Lucero, who finished second. Charlie Venegas of San Bernardino was third, Don Odom of Redondo Beach was fourth and Jesse Finch of Orange fifth.

Lance King of Huntington Beach won the handicap main event.

Costa Mesa beat Concord Golden Bear, 7-5, to finish third in the boys’ 17-and-under division at the Junior Olympic water polo championships in Orlando, Fla.

James Comfort had four goals for Costa Mesa, which had lost in the semifinals to SoCal A, 17-8.

In the boys’ 15-and-under division: SoCal B took third with a 11-3 victory over Costa Mesa. Brent Reimer and Kevin Rosa had three goals each for SoCal.

The championship games are today.

The St. Margaret’s High School football team will move from eight-man to 11-man football this fall, Coach Brady Lock announced.

St. Margaret’s will play in the newly formed Southern Section Division XI in the Freedom League against Downey Calvary Chapel, Riverside California School of the Deaf and Banning Twin Pines.

St. Margaret’s is expected to play its home games at Dana Hills High.

Rodger Markum has been named softball coach at Capistrano Valley Christian High, Athletic Director Terry Gaunt said. Markum was softball coach 1986-91 before leaving to concentrate on business.
