A fire in the Park Glenn apartment complex on Glenn Drive in Camarillo destroyed one apartment and damaged three others Monday, making two people homeless and displacing six.

Firefighters believe the blaze, which began about 4 p.m., was started by a grease fire in the kitchen of the second-story apartment that was gutted by the flames. Three other apartments were damaged by smoke.

Donna Beck, who has lived in the complex for three months, said she was sleeping when the fire broke out next door. She was awakened by her roommate’s pit bull jumping on her bed.

“If it hadn’t been for the dog, I don’t know what would have happened,” said Beck, whose bedroom was filled with smoke.

None of the residents was seriously injured, but a few suffered from smoke inhalation. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

The Red Cross was contacted to help those without a place to stay. Apartment manager Susan Olson said she would provide two empty apartments to house some of the victims.
