A 48-year-old Fillmore man who received second- and third-degree burns over 53% of his body was in critical condition Tuesday at the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital.

Leonard Garcia was burned early Monday when a suspected arson fire broke out in his home at 632 Central Ave., officials said.

Fillmore Fire Chief Patrick Askren said arson investigators believe the couch where Garcia slept had been set on fire.

A dog trained by the Oxnard Fire Department to sniff out suspicious chemicals found a flammable liquid in the single-story, three-bedroom house, Askren said.

Fire damage occurred in the living room, dining room and attic; smoke and heat damage throughout the house.

The 4:18 a.m. fire caused $45,000 in damage to the structure and $25,000 damage to the contents.

An investigation is continuing, Askren said.
