OUTLOOK

When asked to assess his team’s chances, White said, “I don’t think we’ve ever had to rebuild here as much as we have to this season.” A new creation is more like it. Most of the Chargers were backups last year and have minimal varsity experience. White was set to replace quarterback Pat Markovsky (2,088 yards, 19 touchdowns) with projected starter Keith Coleman until Coleman had shoulder surgery during the summer; he is not expected back until mid-season meaning Perez, a transfer from Huntington Beach, assumes a heavy burden. If nothing else, Edison will learn patience. “We’re green in a league that’s tough to be green in,” White said.
