1995 PREP PREVIEW: GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL : NEWPORT HARBOR
Coach: Dan Glenn (10th year).
1994: 33-1 overall, 10-0 in the Sea View League; won its first State Division I title after defeating Stockton St. Mary’s in three games and was ranked No. 1 in the nation by several publications.
Key returners: Jenny Hecker, 5-8, setter, Sr.; Julie Hecker, 5-9, outside hitter, Sr.; Kelly Liebengood, 5-7, outside hitter, Sr.; Laura Wilson, 5-11, middle blocker, Sr.
Key newcomers: Shana Bannert, 5-10, outside hitter, Jr.; Jennifer Carey, 6-1, setter, Fr.; Joanna Fielder, 6-2, middle blocker, Jr.; Melissa Snow, 5-10, outside hitter, So.
Outlook: The Sailors’ losses from last season are mind-boggling. Among their players who are gone, Misty May is at Long Beach State and Melissa Schutz is at Colorado. “This year, we can’t play poorly and have a dominating hitter sort of carry us,” Glenn said. Setter Jenny Hecker leads the Monarchs and her twin, Julie, moves from the right side to replace May at outside hitter. Fielder, a transfer from Estancia, fills Schutz’s middle blocker spot.
