SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Joey Bennett missed the first shot of the game, but the Crescenta Valley High standout didn’t miss much else Tuesday as the Falcons trounced Agoura, 24-6, in a nonleague game.

The Falcons took advantage of their speed by running Coach Pete Loporchio’s newly installed fast-break offense.

“I’m never totally happy but I thought we were fairly successful in implementing our new offense,” Loporchio said.

Fairly successful is an understatement. The Falcons made 24 of 33 shots, led by Bennett’s six goals and Jason Payne’s five. Whenever Agoura showed signs of life, the Falcon offense responded.

Bennett scored three times during a 5-0 first-quarter run that set the tone of the game. Loporchio, who said he thought the Falcons had the game won after the first quarter, brought in reserves to start the second.

“Any time you start going deep into your bench, the other team will make a run,” Loporchio said. “But the score isn’t that crucial. I just want to get guys some experience and see what they can do.”

Agoura cut the lead to 8-4 in the second quarter, but Crescenta Valley answered by scoring on five consecutive possessions. Bennett scored twice during that run, once on an alley-oop from David Kim.

Bennett soared to take the pass with one hand, changed his grip and fired the ball into the upper right corner to give the Falcons a 12-4 lead.

Despite his team’s 14-5 lead at halftime, Loporchio wanted improved play from his defense. He got it. Goalies Andy Cushman and Brian Hasbrouck allowed only one goal in the second half.

The rest of the defense kept the Chargers off balance most of the game, allowing only 19 shots. Hasbrouck, a sophomore, had two acrobatic saves to help keep the Chargers scoreless in the third quarter.

“Both of our goalies do great,” Loporchio said. “I’m as trusting of one as I am of the other. I think they’re the top two goalies in the [Pacific League].”

Justin Beth and Jason Smither each had two goals for Agoura.
