If the Antelope Valley High football team is trying to toughen up before it defends its Golden League and Southern Section Division II championships, all is not going as planned.

The Antelopes, ranked No. 1 in the Valley by The Times, routed once-powerful Bakersfield West Friday night, 46-2, one week after demolishing Hesperia, 63-13, in its 1995 opener.

The Antelopes stampeded, with Trymon Redick rushing three times for 95 yards and two touchdowns and defensive back Cory Oggs making big plays.

The Vikings, who had most of their 94 yards late in the game, barely put up a fight.

Antelope Valley rolled up 250 yards, 212 on the ground, while committing no turnovers.

West committed six turnovers, including four fumbles, and botched several punts.

“They were supposed to have a good defense, but our offense just clicked,” Redick said.

West’s Brandon Williams almost broke away on the opening kickoff but fumbled at the Viking 38-yard line and Gio Campanella recovered for the Antelopes.

On first down at the West 37, quarterback Bobby Brown fumbled the snap and lost 15 yards. He threw to Tony Walker for no gain then nearly threw an interception before the Antelopes punted.

The Vikings gave it away again when quarterback Tye Hammond, on second down, threw an interception to Cory Oggs, who returned it three yards to the West 48. Running back Jermaine Lewis took off on runs of 33 and 11 yards to set up a five-yard sweep by Trymon Redick for a touchdown and a 7-0 Antelope Valley lead.

With 55 seconds left in the first quarter, the Antelopes made it 14-0 because the Vikings again overlooked Oggs, who had already forced a bad punt. With Kodi Marion punting at his 20, Oggs charged through untouched, blocked the punt and recovered it at the seven.

Lewis ran it in on the next play.

West crossed midfield for the first time on its fifth possession but Hammond threw what appeared to be an incomplete pass that was ruled a lateral. Williams tried to retrieve the ball but was swarmed by the Antelopes and Ken Thomas recovered for Antelope Valley at the 39.

On first down Brown threw a perfect play-action pass to Walker for a touchdown that made it 20-0.

Redick raced 56 yards for his second touchdown and after the Vikings botched another punt, David Aranubiah kicked a 31-yard field goal with one second left in the half to make it 30-0.

“I was hoping it would be tougher; I thought it would be a little tougher,” Antelope Coach Brent Newcomb said. “But you never know with high school ball.”

The Antelopes scored in the second half on a field goal by Aranubiah and touchdowns runs by Lewis and Ken Nelson.
