ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREP EXTRA : Santiago Gets Big Second Half From Carbajal

Share

Santiago running back Carlos Carbajal rushed for 156 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Cavaliers to a 14-10 victory over Buena Park at Garden Grove High School.

Carbajal, held to just 10 yards rushing in the first half, carried 26 times for 146 yards in the second half.

But a postgame fight at midfield ruined Santiago’s celebration. Although no players were injured during the 10-minute brawl, officials suspended Santiago tight end Gabe Romero for next week’s game against Garden Grove for his involvement.

Carbajal gave the Cavaliers (2-1) the lead for good with a four-yard touchdown run with six minutes 54 seconds left in the third quarter. Of the 20 plays Santiago ran in the third quarter, 18 were Carbajal rushes.

“I challenged our offensive line at halftime and they responded,” said Santiago Coach Ben Haley. “It opened some big holes for Carlos to run through.”

Buena Park (0-3) scored on the first play of the game as Ruben Gasson connected with Arthur Frazier for an 80-yard touchdown.
