Curtis Robinson’s knee injury couldn’t slow Chapman. Nor could the numerous penalties.

Chapman dominated Claremont-Mudd in the first half, then did it again in the second, running away with a 55-25 victory and two offensive records in the process.

Running back Darnell Morgan rushed for 216 yards in 13 carries, surpassing his mark of 200 set in 1994, and Robinson set another record by scoring four touchdowns, all in the first half.

Robinson, a senior quarterback from Pomona, gave Chapman a 7-0 lead on its opening drive when he kept the ball on an option and scrambled 25 yards for a touchdown on the Panthers’ third play of the game.

A 36-yard punt return by Oscar Ford and a 31-yard run by Morgan set up Robinson’s second score, an eight-yard run around the right side.

Robinson then gave Chapman a 21-0 lead, when he again found running room around the right end on fourth and inches and scored on a 10-yard run with 56 seconds left in the first quarter.

After the Stags got a 34-yard field goal from Mark Wassmuth, Robinson scored for the fourth time on a two-yard quarterback sneak.

The Panthers (2-1) were a dealt a blow when Robinson injured his knee at the end of a 29-yard run just before halftime. The senior appeared to be on his way to a fifth touchdown, but the last defender brought him down at the seven-yard line and Robinson didn’t get up.

The severity of the injury was unknown and Chapman Coach Ken Visser said he would know more in another day.

“There’s a little bit of swelling, a little bit of soreness, but we really don’t know how serious it is right now,” Visser said. “He can walk around on it, but right know they’re saying they have to wait 24 hours to really get a look.”

Junior Josh Bravo replaced Robinson and after fumbling away his first snap, he settled into the offense and threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Martrice Stephens on the Panthers’ first drive of the second half.

For much of the game, Chapman was hurt by penalties, many coming on big gains. The Panthers were flagged 20 times for 175 yards; Claremont-Mudd was penalized six times for 55 yards.

“I was a little discouraged by all of the penalties,” Visser said. “I’m sure that some of them were our fault, but it just seemed like it got a little out of hand to me. You just got to shake it off and keep going.”

Morgan made sure Chapman stayed in rhythm, scoring on 57- and 43-yard runs in the third quarter.
