Cross-Country
Winkler, who has been running competitively for only three years, made a tactical move worthy of a veteran about a mile into the Sonora Invitational Saturday. Winkler let Danielle Day of Quartz Hill take a lead going up a small hill and then made her move at the hill’s crest and pulled away from Day. Winkler won the Division I race in 17 minutes 28 seconds, 16 seconds ahead of Day, who beat Winkler by 13 places at the Southern Section Division I finals last season. On Thursday, Winkler led the Barons to victory over Edison, their first over the Chargers since the early 1980s. She won the race in 17:45.
Cross-Country
Kim Bates
* Los Alamitos, sophomore. Finished fourth in the Division I junior/senior race at Laguna Hills Invitational to lead the Griffins to team title.
Tennis
Alissa Scott
* Corona del Mar, senior. Swept her singles sets as the top-ranked Sea Kings beat No. 6 Laguna Beach, 12-6, and No. 3 Dana Hills, 9-9 (87-81 in games).
Volleyball
Roberta Gehlke
* Mater Dei, senior. Had 35 kills in the No. 2 Monarchs’ four-game victory over then-No. 7 Laguna Beach and 27 in a five-game victory over No. 3 Newport Harbor.
Melissa Wendt
* Huntington Beach, senior. Had 30 kills as the top-ranked Oilers beat Newport Harbor in four games.
