Cross-Country
Winkler, who has been running competitively for only three years, made a tactical move worthy of a veteran about a mile into the Sonora Invitational Saturday. Winkler let Danielle Day of Quartz Hill take a lead going up a small hill and then made her move at the hill’s crest and pulled away from Day. Winkler won the Division I race in 17 minutes 28 seconds, 16 seconds ahead of Day, who beat Winkler by 13 places at the Southern Section Division I finals last season. On Thursday, Winkler led the Barons to victory over Edison, their first over the Chargers since the early 1980s. She won the race in 17:45.
