HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: WEEK 4 : Quartz Hill Sack Attack Bags Saugus

As the Saugus High football team marched quickly off the field at College of the Canyons, having been beaten Friday night, 21-6, by Quartz Hill, Centurion quarterback Chris Kobe questioned his team’s resolve.

“We can’t score,” said Kobe after Saugus dropped to 1-3 with the nonleague defeat. “But it’s more not playing with our hearts and our pride.”

Kobe, starting in place of Kevin Carrasco, who was out because of a groin injury, completed 15 of 24 passes for 202 yards but was sacked 10 times. The Centurions, for the second time in two weeks, rushed for negative yards, with minus-15.

Quartz Hill, which scored all its points in the first half, blitzed its linebackers on nearly every play. David Fetters, a 5-foot-10, 168-pound sophomore who had missed the past two games because of a broken hand, had three sacks and a tackle for a loss and blocked a Kobe pass on fourth down at the Quartz Hill six-yard line in the fourth quarter.

Defensive lineman Terrance Cohens had three sacks, a tackle for a loss and a fumble recovery. Lineman Jacob Waasdorp added two sacks.

“We were blitzing on almost every play, but [the Saugus linemen] weren’t looking at us,” Fetters said.

Brian Woodworth of Quartz Hill (3-1) completed nine of 12 for 119 yards and two touchdowns, both to tight end Andy Rethi (six catches, 97 yards). Junior running back Jeremiah Harris rushed for 134 yards in 16 carries.

Louis Mendez of Saugus caught five passes for 103 yards.

Quartz Hill opened the scoring after forcing Saugus to punt out of its end zone on its second possession. The Rebels’ three-play, 24-yard drive ended with Harris scoring on a 13-yard sweep.

In the second quarter, Cohens recovered a Kobe fumble at the Saugus seven. On the next play, Woodworth found Rethi alone in the end zone for a 14-0 lead.
