ROUNDUP : Mortensen Back on Course With Her Third Record Run of ’95

Kim Mortensen broke a course record for the third time this season to lead the Thousand Oaks High girls’ cross-country team to a runaway victory Saturday in the Central Park Invitational in Huntington Beach.

Mortensen, who suffered her only defeat of the season last weekend, losing to Santa Rosa’s Julia Stamps in the Stanford Invitational, timed 17 minutes 2 seconds over the three-mile course to help the Lancers to a 45-131 victory over runner-up Santa Ana Valley. Earlier, Mortensen set course records at Morley Field in San Diego and San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura.

Thousand Oaks, the state’s top-ranked Division I team, placed seven runners among the first 18 finishers.

“We had a tremendous day,” Coach Jack Farrell said. “It’s the first time this season that we’ve run as well as we’re capable of. . . . I was real pleased with the way they grouped.”

Tara Marsden placed ninth in 18:49 and Erin Sorensen was 10th in 18:50.

Teammates Katie Scherrei and Stephanie Overton placed 12th (19:33) and 15th (19:44).

In another girls’ meet:

Quartz Hill 18, Littlerock 43; Quartz Hill 15, Palmdale 50--Sophomore Danielle Day and freshman Carly Harrill placed first and second for the Rebels (5-0, 5-0) in a Golden League meet at the Rancho Vista course in Palmdale.

Day, fifth in last year’s Southern Section Division I championships, timed 19:56 over the three-mile distance.

Harrill clocked 21:18.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Central Park Invitational--Thousand Oaks seniors Todd Disney and Josh Carolan finished third and fourth to guide the Lancers to fourth place in the meet at Huntington Beach.

Disney timed 15:28 over the three-mile course with Carolan at 15:32 as Thousand Oaks totaled 130 points.

Saddleback won the meet with 72 points, followed by Fair Oaks Del Campo (92) and Santa Ana Valley (123).

Other Lancer finishers were Eric Stoutenburg (37th in 16:37), Chris Jensen (41st in 16:39) and John Barbacha (45th in 16:41).

Clovis Invitational--Ryan Roberts placed sixth and Morgan Harrelson finished 10th to lead Oak Park to the team title in the small schools race at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Roberts timed 16:51 over the 5,000-meter course and Harrelson clocked 17:03. The Eagles had 97 points. Runner-up Piedmont had 122.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Lutheran d. Whittier 15-7, 15-4, 15-7--The Regals (14-1, 4-0) won their 13th consecutive match, one shy of a school record, in the SCIAC match at Cal Lutheran. Liz Martinez had 24 assists and Karen Kasper had 10 kills for Cal Lutheran, ranked fifth in the nation in Division III.

CS Sacramento d. CS Northridge, 15-4, 15-4, 15-5--Holli Hansen had 11 kills and Erin Balderama added seven kills and 11 digs, but the host Matadors (1-19) lost their 16th consecutive match.

MEN’S SOCCER

Concordia 3, The Master’s 2--Paul Goodrich and Lenny Quashie each scored in the last five minutes to give Concordia the victory in the round-robin Westminster Invitational. Joel Murphy and Steve Palm scored for Master’s (6-6).

Cal Lutheran 2, Redlands 1--Brian Collins scored late in the second half for the visiting Kingsmen (7-5-1, 5-0) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

San Jose State 3, CS Northridge 1--Michelle Vargas scored twice in the first half and Momi Aiu added a second-half goal to lead host San Jose State (6-4) in a nonconference match.

Rachel Gagliano scored in the first half to give Northridge (3-6-2) a 1-0 lead. Matador Kim Kuhn made eight saves.

Cal Lutheran 6, Redlands 0--Jill Gallegos scored her 15th goal of the season for the host Regals in a SCIAC match. Gallegos was one of six players to score for Cal Lutheran (11-2-1, 7-0).

The Master’s 4, California Baptist 2--Sarah DeWolf and Tiffany Bordman each scored two goals for the Mustangs (6-6) in a nonconference match at Cal Baptist.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Valley 4, Sierra 3--Gilbert Abramyan scored two goals to lead the Monarchs (11-7-2) in the seventh-place game of the 12-team Citrus tournament.
