Valleywide : Campaign to Crack Down on Speeding

Share

Road warriors beware: Police officers will be cracking down on speeding drivers in Los Angeles County through Sunday as part of a new awareness campaign sponsored by a law enforcement association.

The Peace Officers Assn. of Los Angeles County has named this Speed Enforcement Week, and its members are marking the occasion by working harder to nab hot-rodders.

A variety of methods will be used to put the brakes on speeders, said Jan Nichols, the association’s project director. Police officers will pay special attention to drivers who exceed the 25 m.p.h. speed limit around schools. Some city police departments may choose to assign one person to focus on speeders for the week, she said, and radar and laser guns may get more use than usual.

The group boasts members from all 49 law enforcement agencies that provide traffic enforcement in the county, including the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol.

Nichols said she believed the city police departments from Glendale, Burbank and San Fernando would also participate in the campaign to catch speeders.

In the past two weeks, according to association officials, police officers have been distributing posters and key chains publicizing the importance of abiding by speed limits.
