STILL THE ONE

Although the senior season of Larry Montgomery has been ended by a knee injury, the Troy running back is still being sought after by many Division I schools.

He’ll pay an official visit to UCLA this weekend, and Washington State is still trying to persuade him to come. Florida State has requested game film.

“Realistically I don’t think the word is out yet [about the injury],” Warrior Coach John Turek said. “There will be a downside. But it’s not an injury that will keep him from playing again, and whatever school gets him will be lucky. He wants to play, but rarely do you have a kid with his kind of future, and you don’t want to jeopardize that.”

He finished with 374 yards in 38 carries.

LOOKING AHEAD

It’s Big Game week again.

The Los Alamitos-Esperanza battle for Sunset League supremacy takes place Friday night. Los Alamitos (6-0), is ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, and the Aztecs (4-2), who play some of the toughest nonleague opponents around, are ranked sixth in Orange County.

Last year’s game, which the Griffins rallied to win, 35-32, was played in front of 10,000 at Veterans Stadium. Esperanza officials are keeping this year’s game at Valencia High, where capacity is 5,280 at Bradford Stadium.

Capistrano Valley plays at San Clemente Friday night. The winner could present a formidable challenge to Mater Dei in the South Coast League.

El Toro plays host to Corona del Mar Friday night at Trabuco Hills High in what could be a high-scoring Sea View League matchup.

MISSED CHANCE

At the end of the first half of El Toro’s 24-15 victory over Newport Harbor Friday, kicker Chad Johnson lined up to attempt a 59-yard field goal.

Johnson, who has booted a 47-yarder this season and says he has kicked a 60-yarder in practice, was denied a chance to break the county record when the Chargers were flagged for illegal motion before the snap.

Detroit Tiger rookie Phil Nevin (El Dorado) set the record of 57 yards in 1988.

ANAHEIM ROOTS

Five members of the Brea Olinda coaching staff have histories with Anaheim High, their Friday night opponent.

Wildcat Coach Jon Looney played for the Colonists, as did assistant coaches George Dena, Dan Herrera and George Fraser, who also coached at Anaheim. Inside linebackers coach Wayne Atkins, who also coached at Anaheim, still teaches there.
