THE PREPS : FOOTBALL / SEA VIEW LEAGUE : Santa Margarita Easily Defeats Woodbridge, 41-10

Billy Newman ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns and Chris Collins passed for 126 yards and another score Saturday night to lead Santa Margarita past Woodbridge, 41-10, at Irvine High.

The Eagle victory set up a showdown for first place in the Sea View League when Santa Margarita plays host to El Toro this week. Both are 6-1, 2-0 in league.

“Our kids came out tonight and did what we had to do,” Santa Margarita Coach Dick Hartigan said. “We tried to take care of this one early. We have a big game with El Toro next week.”

Newman scored on runs of three, 24 and 11 yards to help the Eagles to a 34-3 halftime lead. Collins also had a scoring run of 10 yards in the first half. He capped a six-play, 24-yard drive that gave the Eagles a 14-0 first-quarter lead. The drive began after an interception by defensive end Chris Carney.

Later in the half Collins ended a five-play, 62-yard drive with a 20-yard scoring pass to tight end Eric Brown.

Woodbridge (0-6-1, 0-2), which has not won in 12 games dating to last season, used a little razzle dazzle and a Santa Margarita fumble to score for the first time in three games. Faced with a fourth and two on their 25, the Warriors punted. But Santa Margarita fumbled and Woodbridge’s Chad Harris recovered at the Eagle 45 with assists from Matt Stevens and Josh Taylor.

Several plays later, after quarterback Brian Millat was sacked for an eight-yard loss, kicker Matt Kerns connected on a 46-yard field goal.

Kerns also drilled a 44-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, but the kick was nullified by a penalty. His 57-yard attempt fell just short.

Woodbridge (0-6-1, 0-2) scored its second touchdown of the season on a nine-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Adam Lawyer to Bryan Douglass with less than a minute to go.

Lawyer, who came on in relief of Millat in the second half, completed 10 of 22 passes for 169 yards. He was intercepted once.

“The kids played hard, we’re a young team and and scoring 10 points hopefully bodes well for us in the future,” Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said. “But we won’t know that until the future.”
