PREP ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Deals San Clemente First League Loss

Roberta Gehlke had 23 kills to lead Mater Dei to a three-game sweep over San Clemente in a South Coast League girls’ volleyball match Thursday at Mater Dei.

Third-ranked Mater Dei (15-2, 6-2 in league) won 15-10, 15-13, 15-12, handing second-ranked San Clemente (12-2, 7-1) its first league loss.

Laurie Layton had 63 assists for the Monarchs. Wendy Wilkins had 15 kills for the Tritons, who beat Mater Dei, 15-8, 15-5, 16-14, in their first league match.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 3, Corona del Mar 2--The sixth-ranked Eagles (11-1, 7-1) won, 15-7, 13-15, 15-13, 7-15, 15-3. Kelly Campbell had 30 kills for Corona del Mar (4-7, 3-5).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 3, Edison 0--The top-ranked Oilers clinched the league title with a 15-6, 15-2, 15-11 victory over the host Chargers.

Jill Meyers had 12 kills and Melissa Wendt had nine aces for the Oilers (15-0, 8-0). Ninth-ranked Edison is 10-4, 5-3.

In Sea View League boys’ cross-country:

Santa Margarita wins two--Michael Murray won the three-mile race in a course-record time of 15:54 for host Santa Margarita (5-0), which defeated Corona del Mar, 25-32, and Woodbridge, 23-33.

In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:

Irvine sweeps--Jessica Corbin of Irvine set a record on the three-mile course at O’Neill Park. Corbin’s time of 18:21 topped Corona del Mar’s Tracy Clark’s 1994 time of 18:26.

Santa Margarita 26, Corona del Mar 29--Katie Nuanes set a course record at Santa Margarita, finishing in 18:37 to lead the No. 8 Eagles (3-2) over No. 9 Corona Del Mar (2-2).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 20, Laguna Beach 40--Araceli Martinez broke a school record, finishing in 19:15 on the three-mile course at Fairview Park for host Estancia (2-3).

In Sea View League girls’ tennis:

Woodbridge 13, Newport Harbor 5--No. 2 Woodbridge (17-2, 8-1) won all nine doubles sets to defeat sixth-ranked Newport Harbor.
