PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : FREEDOM LEAGUE : Interceptions End St. Margaret’s Comeback

Banning Twin Pines returned three interceptions for touchdowns in the fourth quarter to lead the Bobcats to a 48-23 victory over St. Margaret’s in a Freedom League game Friday night at Dana Hills High.

After taking a 12-9 lead into the half, Banning Twin Pines (4-4, 2-0) took the second half kickoff and marched 80 yards in nine plays and scored when Gustavo Stanko threw his only pass of the game, a 35-yard touchdown to Brian Mitchell. Stanko ran in the two point conversion to make it 20-9.

St. Margaret’s answered on the following drive, going 65-yards in six plays and scoring when Mike Heydenrych threw 15 yards to Peter Nelmes. Heydenrych’s extra-point kick was blocked, making the score 20-15 with 5:24 left in the third quarter.

The Bobcatsagain drove 80 yards, this time in seven plays, and scored when Brandon Kitchen ran 17 yards for the touchdown. Davis Carrillo’s run gave Banning Twin Pines a 28-15 lead.

Theron Chiles intercepted a Heydenrych pass and ran it back 52 yards for a touchdown with 9:41 left in the game, giving Twin Pines a 34-15 lead.

The Tartans (1-6, 1-1) came back when Heydenrych, who completed 26 of 54 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns, threw 41 yards to Robert Miltner for the touchdown. Heydenrych’s pass to Perin for the two-point conversion made the score 34-23.

The Bobcats sealed the victory when Gary Patterson ran an interception back 60 yards for the score and Dennis Martinez followed on the next possession with an interception return of 15 yards for another Twin Pines score. Tyree Mitchell, who rushed for 145 yards in nine carries, added a two-point conversion making, the score 48-23.
