For most of the night, Sonora stumbled through its league game with Buena Park, but Shawn Brass rescued the Raiders by catching a 23-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Rodriguez, allowing Sonora to grab a 14-13 victory Friday night at Buena Park High.

“We’ll take it,” Sonora Coach Mark Takkinen said. “We’ve lost a couple of close games this season so its nice to finally win one at the end like this.”

Sonora (5-3, 2-1) trailed by 10 points early in the third quarter. Brass, who averages 6.6 yards per carry, had a 60-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 10-7.

Buena Park (0-8, 0-3) responded with a 44-yard field goal by Jude Reyes with 11:17 left in the game.

Sonora had one final drive, which covered 75 yards in 11 plays, and ending with Brass’ touchdown.

The Coyotes surprised Sonora in the first half when Reyes kicked a 43-yard field goal on the last play of the second quarter to give Buena Park a 3-0 lead.

On Buena Park’s first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Neil Flores bounced off the line and ran around left end for a 45-yard touchdown, giving the Coyotes a 10-0 lead.

The touchdown was Buena Park’s fourth of the season.

Flores rushed for 109 yards in 13 carries for the Coyotes. Brass led all rushers with 146 yards in 17 carries.
