ROUNDUP : CLU Kicks Home Another Title

Jill Simmer scored three goals to highlight a five-goal second half as Cal Lutheran captured its fifth consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer championship with a 6-1 victory Saturday over visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Cal Lutheran (15-2-2, 11-0-1 in conference play) is 58-1-1 in SCIAC play the past five seasons.

Deanna Logue’s goal with two minutes to play in the first half gave Cal Lutheran a 1-0 lead. Holly Roepke scored two minutes into the second half, and Simmer followed with her first goal two minutes later on an assist by Roepke.

Michelle Scheidler scored for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (5-12-1, 4-7-1) 54 seconds after Simmer’s goal.

Cal Lutheran’s Jill Gallegos, who assisted on Logue’s goal, scored on a penalty kick and Simmer added consecutive goals to finish the scoring.

Cal Lutheran goalie Amy Walz made one save.

Sara Dack made 10 saves and Kathryn Gaffney made four for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Playoff pairings for the NCAA Division III playoffs will be determined today.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 3, Claremont-Mudd 3--Jan Hammervold scored two goals and Brian Collins scored one for visiting Cal Lutheran in round-robin play of the SCIAC playoffs.

Hammervold and Collins scored to give Cal Lutheran (11-6-2, 9-0-1) a 2-1 halftime lead in the overtime match. Lai Luan scored on a penalty kick in the first half for Claremont-Mudd.

Chris Stewart scored in the second half to pull Claremont-Mudd even. Luan added another goal on a penalty kick and Hammervold scored again for Cal Lutheran to forge a tie.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships--Cal Lutheran’s Jed Colvin placed fifth as the Kingsmen finished sixth in the meet at Prado Park in Chino.

Colvin timed 26 minutes 7 seconds over the 8,000-meter course to help Cal Lutheran to a 159-point total. Occidental, paced by the 1-3 finish of Will Allan and Bell-Jeff graduate Terence Flynn, placed first with 38.

West Coast Conference championships--Jeremy Maug of Pepperdine placed 26th to lead the Waves to a fifth-place total of 162 points in the meet at Crystal Springs in Belmont. Maug timed 28:26 over the 8,000-meter course.

Portland swept the first six places to win its 17th consecutive conference title.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships--Amy Van Atta of Cal Lutheran finished 22nd in the meet at Prado Park in Chino.

Van Atta, a freshman from Buena High, clocked 20:38 over the 5,000-meter course as the Regals finished eighth in the team standings with 221 points. Victorious Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took five of the top eight places to total 24 points.

West Coast Conference championships--Pepperdine’s Shannon Rogers placed 14th with a time of 20:16 over the three-mile course to pace the Waves to sixth in the team standings.

Pepperdine totaled 159 points. Gonzaga edged St. Mary’s, 34-42, for the team title.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Pepperdine 13, Pacific 4--Junior two-meter man Alan Hermann continued his torrid scoring spree with five goals as the Waves posted a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory at Stockton.

Hermann, coming off a season-high eight-goal performance on Monday, leads the Waves with 40 goals.

Jack Kocur, Scott Seminoff and Val Tompkins each scored two goals for the Waves (10-7, 3-3).

Pacific is 7-16, 0-7.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. Gonzaga, 15-1, 13-15, 10-15, 15-4, 16-14--Nicole Sanderson led host Pepperdine (17-8, 7-2) with 27 kills in a West Coast Conference match. Tara Kroesch added 11 kills, Becci Roehl had 61 assists.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Cornerstone Christian d. Villanova Prep, 15-7, 15-9, 15-4--Karen Breshears had 15 kills and three aces for host Cornerstone Christian in the Condor League match.

Julie Fiefert added seven kills and 15 assists for the Eagles (13-3, 5-3).
