St. Genevieve High named Darius Floyd boys’ basketball coach Tuesday, athletic director John Yakel said.

Floyd, a varsity assistant coach at Burbank High for the past three seasons, replaces Dan Donovan, who quit the job in early October to become a men’s assistant at Valley College.

Floyd was an assistant at El Camino Real High from 1986-1991. Floyd, who grew up in New Jersey, graduated from Moorpark College, where he played football and ran track.

“I’m thrilled about the position,” Floyd said from his home in West Los Angeles. “I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Yakel interviewed six candidates for the open coaching position, but said Floyd, 32, best fit what the school was looking for.

“He is very basketball oriented,” Yakel said. “Sometimes when you hire someone on such short notice, you feel like you’re settling for the bottom of the barrel, but I don’t know if we would have found anyone better if the job opened last year.”

Basketball practice starts Nov. 11.
