In the Empire League finals:

Katella sweeps--Erick Miramontes led the Katella sweep as five Knights finished within 35 seconds of each other on the three-mile course at Irvine Park.

Miramontes, a senior, finished in 15:50, followed by Edgar Benitez (15:58), Juan Venegas (16:06), George Pinto (16:20) and Mike Cisneros (16:23). Century took second with 68 and Loara finished third (102).

In the girls’ race, junior Nancy Pinto won her first individual league title, winning in 19:31. Teammate Jill Santibanes finished second in 20:00 to help Katella win the team title with 20 points. El Dorado took second with 51, followed by Century (75), Cypress (92), Loara (130) and Kennedy (157).

In the Golden West League girls’ finals:

Saddleback wins title--Gabby Martinez paced Saddleback (35 points) to the league title with a first-place finish in 19:11 on the three-mile course at Huntington Beach’s Central Park. Saddleback runners also finished fifth and sixth; Lisa Ritter of Westminster was second in 19:52.

Tustin, which had three runners among the top 10, finished second with 66 points and Santa Ana, which also had three among the top 10, was third with 71.

In the Olympic League finals:

Orange Lutheran dominates girls’ competition--Orange Lutheran placed seven runners among the top 10 to run away with the girls’ title at Laguna Niguel Park.

Kristin Groncy won the three-mile race in 19:00 and Katie Peters (19:32), Rebecca McIntosh (19:51) and Tiffany Poncy (20:09) rounded out the top four for the Lancers, who had 16 points.

Brethren Christian was second with 74 points and Ontario Christian third (93).

Orange Lutheran won the boys’ championship for the first time in school history. Robert Morgan (16:21) and Matt Fischer (16:24) finished first and second as Orange Lutheran had six runners run career-best times.

Whittier Christian (50) was second and Cerritos Valley Christian third (109).

Jon Carder of Whittier Christian finished third in 17:21.
