Four people honored as their school districts’ Teacher of the Year will represent Orange County later this month in Sacramento, where they will compete for statewide honors. They are:

* Eamon Kane, an English teacher at Irvine High School in the Irvine Unified School District.

* Cheryl Mahlstedt, a physical education teacher at Ball Junior High School in the Anaheim Union High School District.

* Rhonda Parks, an elementary teacher at W.R. Nelson School in the Tustin Unified School District.

* Sheila McCabe, an agriculture teacher at Fullerton High School in the Fullerton Joint Union High School District.

The top honoree at the community college level was Fred Peters, a psychology instructor at Fullerton College. Peters and the four others each received a $15,500 cash award for their accomplishments.

The 39 other nominees for the county’s Teacher of the Year were also commended and received cash awards of $1,150 each.

The county’s winners were honored recently at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. The cash awards for the Teacher of the Year program were provided by the Dr. James Hines Foundation and the Orange County Teachers Federal Credit Union.
