SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Now the real fun begins for Los Alamitos.

The Griffins, ranked second in the county and third in the Southern Section Division I, tuned up for the playoffs with a 54-0 victory over Marina in a Sunset League game Friday at Westminster High.

There were few glitches in the regular-season finale for the Griffins, who have won three section titles in the last four seasons and narrowly missed making it to the Division I finals last season.

Los Alamitos quarterback Kevin Feterik completed 12 of 15 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, in a little more than two quarters of action. He also ran for two touchdowns to help the Griffins (9-1, 4-1 in league) score 27 second-quarter points to break the game open.

Wide receiver Tony Hartley, who caught six passes for 211 yards, scored on Los Alamitos’ first play from scrimmage, turning Feterik’s short inside-screen pass into an 83-yard scoring play.

The Griffins recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Feterik capitalized, connecting with Sean Stein on a 12-yard scoring pass to make it, 14-0, with 7 minutes 23 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Feterik’s five-yard touchdown pass to Stan Guyness capped a 10-play, 65-yard scoring drive to make it, 21-0, with 8:17 remaining in the second quarter.

Then the Griffins scored three touchdowns in seven plays.

Feterik tossed a 38-yard bomb to Hartley to set up his 13-yard bootleg touchdown run to make it 28-0. On the Griffins’ next possession, Feterik’s 19-yard pass to Hartley set up a 19-yard touchdown run by Tony Austin to make it, 35-0, with 2:47 remaining in the second quarter.

Los Alamitos’ defense held again, and Feterik’s 45-yard pass to Hartley set up his own 21-yard touchdown run to make it 41-0 at halftime. The first string’s fine tuning for the postseason was nearly complete.

“I think we have an awful good football team,” Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes said. “We have more potential than last year’s team, but I don’t know if we we’ve played to that level yet.”

Although that could be ominous news to the Griffins potential playoff opponents, Marina running back Mike Williams revealed a possible weakness in a Griffin defense that has allowed only 85 points this season.

Williams rushed for 145 yards in 36 carries and had 89 yards in the first quarter. But the Vikings didn’t have much balance, and freshman quarterback Scott Austin completed only one of 12 passes for two yards.

So Marina (3-7, 1-4) had to rely almost solely on Williams, who rushed for 1,485 yards this season.
