SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

On the bus ride to Saugus High, they discussed which computers are the best buys and, perhaps more important, who is taking whom to the upcoming semi-formal.

After members of the Harvard-Westlake High girls’ volleyball team dismantled Saugus in a second-round match of the Southern Section Division II playoffs, 15-6, 15-0, 15-6, there was a new topic of conversation.

How far can the second-seeded Wolverines, who needed only 54 minutes to dispose of Saugus, advance in the playoffs?

“We want to go to the finals,” said Lesley Coben, who had nine kills, but was one-upped by Coach Jess Quiroz. “We want to take it [all],” Quiroz said.

If the Wolverines (20-1) keep playing like they did against Saugus (12-4), their terms won’t be conditional for long.

During one stretch, they outscored the Centurions, 29-1.

Harvard-Westlake was especially strong with A) pinpoint serving, which threw the Saugus offense out of whack and B) aggressive defense, which kept the Centurions’ whacks from hitting the floor.

“They are very skilled, very precise and they have lots of confidence,” Saugus Coach Bobbie Estes said. “Good combination.”

Harvard-Westlake had seven aces, Saugus one.

“I was impressed,” Quiroz said. “When you have that many serving aces, geez, it shows we were focused.”

The Centurions, co-champions of the Foothill League, defeated Marymount in the first round.

Saugus tied the Wolverines at 5-5 in the first game, but came no closer.

Saugus failed to score in the second game and trailed in the third game, 12-1, when the Wolverines’ reserves made an appearance.

The Centurions were led by Teressa Thatcher with four kills.

Christine Bohle had nine kills, Bettina Korek had six and Malaika Naulls added four for Harvard-Westlake, which won the Mission League title for the fourth consecutive season.

Setter Jenni Kriste had a solid all-around match with five kills, 30 assists, four aces and a solo block to boot. Kriste orally committed to California earlier this week after considering Southern California, UCLA and Duke.

Harvard-Westlake, which lost to Millikan in the semifinals last season, will play the winner of the Lakewood St. Joseph-Marlborough match in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

“Everyone’s really pumped up,” Coben said. “If we play to our ability, we’ll be fine.”

Said Quiroz: “We’re keeping everything in perspective and doing what we have to do.”
