ROUNDUP : Crescenta Valley Goes Under

Crescenta Valley High played more than 45 minutes of water polo Tuesday, only to lose to Mira Costa, 11-10, in a six-overtime Southern Section Division III quarterfinal at Mira Costa.

Tim Rogers scored 2 minutes 17 seconds into the sixth overtime to lift fourth-ranked Mira Costa into Saturday’s semifinal against Bell Gardens.

Fifth-ranked Crescenta Valley (23-3) led, 9-8, with five seconds to play in regulation when Mira Costa’s Ryan Acosta scored to send the match into overtime. Both teams scored a goal in the fifth period.

“Longest game I’ve ever been involved in,” Crescenta Valley Coach Pete Loporchio said.

Eric Appelin scored four goals for Crescenta Valley and Jon Conrad added three goals. Goalie Brian Hasbrouck made 24 saves.

Jeremy Simkins made 16 saves for Mira Costa.

In other playoff matches:

Burroughs 12, Peninsula 6--Alfonso Tucay scored four goals for the ninth-ranked Indians (19-6) in a quarterfinal upset of the third-ranked Panthers in a Division III quarterfinal match at Valley College.

Burroughs jumped ahead, 3-1, in the first quarter with sharp outside shooting by Joe Riley (two goals) and Eric Denny (two goals), and did not relinquish the lead.

The Burroughs defense, led by goalie Mike Denny and his 19 saves, frustrated Peninsula for the entire match.

Foothill 15, Harvard-Westlake 7--Top-ranked Foothill eliminated the seventh-ranked Wolverines (20-7) for the second consecutive year in a Division I second-round match at Harvard.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Nordhoff 13, South Hills 5--Nordhoff (14-8) swept the singles matches to upset top-seeded South Hills in a Division V quarterfinal playoff match.

Stacey Roberts recorded 6-1, 6-3 and 6-1 victories, Haley Wilbur won, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Brianne Chapman swept, 6-2, 6-4 and 7-5.

Roberts improved to 47-16 in singles matches.

Bell 7, Verdugo Hills 0--Bell’s three doubles teams recorded victories in a City Section 3-A Division semifinal at Racquet Centre in Studio City. Aida Lugo of Bell defeated Sonia Beduya, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, in the top singles match.

MEN’S SOCCER

Mission 7, Oxnard 0--Israel Cabrera had three goals as the Free Spirit (11-3-3, 6-3-1) wrapped up Western State Conference play.

Kris Swanson scored twice for Mission, giving him 13 goals.

Miller Rodriguez had three assists for the Free Spirit, which went 0-14 in 1994 and earned its first playoff berth in 20 years.

Moorpark 6, Glendale 2--Six players scored for the Raiders (2-14-1, 2-8) in their WSC season finale.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Moorpark 7, Santa Monica 1--Lori Haskell had two goals and two assists for the Raiders (11-2-2, 7-1-2) in the Western State Conference season finale.

Debbie Smith added two goals and one assist while goalkeeper Joleene Redublo had six saves for Moorpark, which won the conference championship.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

L.A. Baptist d. Whitney, 15-9, 15-9, 13-15, 15-10--Kristen Jensen had 21 kills and Gloria Erickson added 19 for the Knights (16-3) in a Division V playoff quarterfinal victory.

Tunde Hrotko had 47 assists and four blocks for L.A. Baptist, while Tracy Jensen contributed seven service aces and 10 kills.

L.A. Baptist will play Mission Prep in the semifinals on Thursday at a site to be determined.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo d. Cal State Northridge, 15-8, 15-3, 5-15, 15-13--Heather Lee had 13 assists and Melissa Pierce added 11 assists for the host Mustangs (9-18) in a nonconference victory.

Carrie Kapfenberg had 20 kills for Northridge (2-28) and Lisa Bussard added 11 kills. Heather Hofmans had 46 assists.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 66, Fresno Pacific 61--Mike Penberthy had 39 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Mustangs (1-0) in their nonconference opener at Fresno.

Penberthy sank 10 of 20 shots, including three of 10 three-pointers, and made 16 free throws without a miss as Master’s came back from a 10-point deficit early in the second half.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Victor Valley 97, Valley 90--Valery Brady’s 31 points for the Monarchs (2-1) were not enough to overcome a 47-32 halftime deficit in the nonconference game.

Valley opened the second half with a 23-8 run to tie the score, 55-55, but couldn’t keep up the rest of the way.

Shawanda Hotchkiss had 15 points for the Monarchs, and Jenille Ramos added five points and 12 assists.
