PREP NOTES : Villa Park Hires Melendrez to Coach Softball

Robert Melendrez has been hired as softball coach at Villa Park, the school announced.

Melendrez, who previously coached at Calvary Chapel, replaces Dave Shelton, who was the Spartans’ head coach for 18 years.

The semifinal games for the Southern Section Division I water polo playoffs will be held Saturday at Tustin High, Foothill Coach Jim Brumm said. Top-seeded Foothill will play fourth-seeded El Toro at 1:30 p.m. and second-seeded Long Beach Wilson will play third-seeded Villa Park at 3:15 p.m.

John Cahill has resigned as boys’ volleyball coach at El Modena after two seasons to pursue a teaching degree. He will continue as the girls’ basketball coach at the school.

Doug Domene of Esperanza has been named national District 8 assistant coach of the year by the National High School Baseball Coaches Assn. Domene will be honored at a Dec. 2 luncheon at the Anaheim Hilton, at which time association officials will introduce the honorees from all eight districts.
