PREP ROUNDUP : Santiago Upsets No. 2 Santa Ana in Wrestling

Unranked Santiago upset second-ranked Santa Ana, 40-30, in a nonleague wrestling match Thursday night at Santiago High.

Junior Octavio Villa, wrestling in his first high school match, had a crucial victory for Santiago, beating 160-pounder George Perez, 9-6, to give his team a 34-27 lead.

Santiago (1-0) went on to win the 189- and 215-pound matches to put the match out of reach. Ricky Flores and Juan Garcia had pins for Santiago. Santa Ana is 0-1.

In the Carson City girls’ basketball tournament:

Marina 70, Wooster (Nev.) 48--Sonya Bryant scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Marina. Kirsten Cappel added 21 points for the Vikings (2-0).

In the Rancho Grande girls’ basketball tournament:

Brea Olinda 77, Montclair 31--Marissa Bradley scored 18 points for Brea Olinda (2-0), which advanced to the semifinals.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Westminster 62, Costa Mesa 50--Westminster outscored the Mustangs, 18-6, in the first quarter to take command early. Erin Moore led the Lions (1-0) with 17 points. Koo Kim had 21 for Costa Mesa.

In nonleague girl’s soccer:

Bolsa Grande 1, Western 0--Laina Kinsella scored in the second half and goalkeeper Sara Schenck had 10 saves for Bolsa Grande (1-0).

Foothill 2, Newport Harbor 1--Laura Dooly and Nikki Zahler scored first-half goals for host Foothill (2-0). Jill Nelsen scored for Newport Harbor (0-2).

Laguna Hills 3, Marina 3--Karine Inoue scored two goals for Laguna Hills (1-0-1), which led 3-1 at the half. Marina (0-1-1) rallied to tie with second-half goals by Lisa Anderson and Tara Donagan.

Pacifica 2, Ocean View 1--Ann DeAugustine and Amanda Freed each scored for Pacifica (1-1).

Valencia 2, La Puente Bishop Amat 2--Rachel Ferrari and Alejandra Nunez each scored in the second half as Valencia (0-0-2) rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit.
