COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Marauders Advance to Finals

The Antelope Valley College men’s basketball team upset Riverside, 95-69, in a semifinal game of the Antelope Valley College tournament Friday at Antelope Valley College.
Jerome Payton and Brandon McIntire each scored 23 points as the Marauders (7-3) pulled away from Riverside (9-2) in the second half after being tied, 40-40, at halftime. Payton also grabbed 13 rebounds and Brian Burleson added 21 points.
The Marauders will face Mira Costa in the tournament title game Sunday at 4 p.m.
In another Antelope Valley tournament game:
Trade Tech 86, Canyons 70--Despite having four players score in double figures, the Cougars (2-5) lost to Trade Tech (5-2) in a consolation semifinal. Trade Tech led, 45-33, at the half.
Cal Lutheran 98, Pacific Christian 63--Dave Ulloa hit four of five three-pointers on his way to a 24-point, five- assist performance for the host Kingsmen (3-1) in a nonconference game.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Ventura 81, Chaffey 42--Marina Torres scored 21 points and Kadaiya Johns, Tori Anderson and Brianna Kanongata’a each had 12 for the Pirates (6-0) in the semifinals of the College of the Sequoias tournament.
Valley 65, Golden West 63--Valery Brady hit a three-point basket with 50 seconds remaining and Virginia Juarez added a free throw with 17 seconds left in Valley’s come-from-behind victory in the College of the Sequoias tournament semifinals. Brady’s basket gave Valley (5-1) its first lead.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Pepperdine d. Rice, 15-4, 13-15, 15-12, 19-17--Outside hitter Nicole Sanderson had 26 kills and setter Becci Roehl had 70 assists to help the Waves (23-10) improve to 2-0 in pool play in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship at Kansas City. The Waves beat Kansas State earlier Friday.
