PREP ROUNDUP : Santa Margarita Beats Villa Park in Title Game

Allen Krist scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds as Santa Margarita beat Villa Park, 48-40, in the title game of the San Luis Obispo tournament Saturday.

Krist was selected the tournament’s most valuable player and teammate Trey Nelson, who had six points, also made the all-tournament team. Santa Margarita is 4-0.

Eric Chenowith led Villa Park (2-1) with 13 points.

In the Brea Backyard bash:

Esperanza 71, Katella 57--Josh Greer scored 24 points as Esperanza (4-0) won the championship game. Carlos Romero was the leading scorer with 28 points for Katella (3-1).

Brea Olinda 69, Whittier La Serna 62--Eric Repp scored 19 points for Brea Olinda (3-1). Sean Wink had 16 and John Heredia added eight points and 10 assists as the Wildcats took third place.

In the Daily Pilot tip-off boys’ basketball tournament:

Estancia 70, Los Alamitos 66--Dane Ploch scored 23 points and was named tournament MVP, as Estancia (4-0) won the championship. Teammate Sam Nelson added 16 points. A.D. Lamoureux, Travis Strang and Chris Glass each scored 14 points for Los Alamitos (3-1).

Troy 47, Irvine 45--John Torres scored 14 points and Jerry Inzunza added 11 for Troy (3-1), which took third place. Shaun Guinn led all scorers with 20 points for Irvine (2-2).

In the Elks Coyote Invitational:

Calvary Chapel 74, Buena Park 62--Joe Ortiz scored 23 points to lead Calvary Chapel (4-0) in the championship game against host Buena Park (3-1).

In the Lancer Pride boys’ basketball tournament:

Orange 47, Valencia 24--Juan Dotson had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Orange (3-0) in the championship game. Dotson was named the tournament MVP.

Orange Lutheran 56, Bolsa Grande 52--Jason Kemner scored 21 points as the Lancers (2-1) finished the tournament in third place.

In the Mission Viejo Tournament:

Mission Viejo 58, Laguna Hills 38--Commander King scored 13 points and added eight assists to lead Mission Viejo (4-0) to its second consecutive tournament title. King was named tournament MVP.

El Toro 71, Aliso Niguel 39--Travis Senik scored 32 points to lead El Toro (3-1) past Aliso Niguel in a third place game.

In the National Sports Grill tournament:

Sonora 59, Woodbridge 53--Ben Jones scored 21 points and tournament most valuable player Josh Lien added 18 for Sonora (4-0) in the championship victory. Chris Burgess scored a game-high 31 points in the loss for Woodbridge (3-1).

Cypress 85, Capistrano Valley 79--Chad Boberg scored 42 points to lead Cypress in the third place game.

County runner earns spot in national race--Katie Nuanes from Santa Margarita qualified for the Foot Locker National Cross-Country Championships by finishing seventh at a regional qualifying race. Nuanes covered the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, well behind defending champion Julia Stamps, who ran at Woodward Park in Fresno in a course-record time of 16:45.
