COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Concordia Gets Past Chapman

Jeff Putnam scored 19 points and Jaime Jaquez added 17 as Concordia beat Chapman, 68-58, in the title game of the Redlands men’s basketball tournament Saturday.

Putnam, who also had 14 rebounds, was the tournament’s most valuable player. Danny Barajas, who also made the all-tournament team, added 12 for Concordia (4-3).

Jim Falletta had 12 points for Chapman and Toby Curto and Greg Vanden Ordel added 11 each. Vanden Ordel also had 17 rebounds. Chapman (5-1) made only three of 21 three-point attempts. Concordia was one of three three-point attempts.

Pete Sverkos, who had nine points for Chapman, also made the all-tournament team.

In the UC Irvine Newport Beach Marriott women’s basketball tournament:

UC Irvine 66, Texas El Paso 52--Tamera Thomas, the tournament MVP, had 16 points, three assists and six steals for UC Irvine (4-0). It’s the first time in the college’s history that the program has started 4-0.

Leticia Oseguera and Allah-mi Basheer had 17 points each also for Irvine. Oseguera also had a game-high 10 rebounds. Oseguera ad Basheer also made the all-tournament team.

Missouri Kansas City beat Texas Christian, 76-48, in the consolation championship.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s tournament:

Concordia 78, Biola 67--Angela Sather scored 30 points to lead tournament host Concordia (3-4) in the championship game. Teammate Heather Carll scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds.

Ivana Kovacic scored 15 points for Biola (3-3). Teammate Sonia Schwenk scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds for Biola.

Azusa Pacific 80, Southern California College 76--Christy Brock scored 20 points to lead Azusa Pacific in a consolation game.

Stephanie Werdel scored 14 points for Southern California College (1-5). Teammates Angela Minor and Carrie Burt each scored 11 points for the Vanguards.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Chapman 74, Occidental 66--Monique Sweet and Alana Conyers each scored 16 points in the victory for Chapman (3-2). Conyers also added 10 rebounds.

Chapman trailed 39-37, at the half, but outscored Occidental (0-2), 37-27, in the second half for the victory. Flo Luppani added five points, seven assists and three steals for Chapman.
