Chalk one up for the City Section.

Behind a pair of goals by Michelle George and a dominating performance by Kim Pickup, Chatsworth High defeated Chaminade, 3-2, Thursday night in an intersectional girls’ soccer match between the area’s best City team and last season’s Mission League champion.

George, a center midfielder, and Pickup, a center fullback who roamed far upfield, teamed to give the Eagles fits the entire match.

George scored the Chancellors’ last two goals in the 39th and 76th minutes. Both came on assists from Pickup, who scored the first goal from 40 yards in the 28th minute.

“Coach [Jack Sidwell] let Kim come up next to me and we were really on tonight,” George said. “I love playing in the middle with someone who’s aggressive.”

Pickup, who has orally committed to Santa Clara, boomed long shots at the net, dribbled through the Eagles and won nearly every loose ball within 20 yards.

But it was Pickup’s throw-ins that created the most stress for Chaminade (5-1). Nine times she used a well-practiced move in which she turns a complete flip to catapult the ball as far as 50 yards.

The first eight were uneventful. The ninth sailed directly into the Chaminade goal-mouth, where George headed it to the ground and kicked it into the net for her second goal, sealing the victory for Chatsworth (1-0-1).

Chaminade, out-hustled and overmatched in the first 35 minutes, struck in the last minute of the half when Kerrie Clavendasher took a pass from Erin Kelley and scored from close range.

Chaminade’s Vanessa Thiele blasted a 45-yard direct kick past Chatsworth goalie Ariella Loewenstein in the match’s final minute.

“[Chatsworth’s] midfield was outstanding,” Chaminade Coach Mike Evans said of Michelle George, Pickup, Pam George--Michelle’s sister--and Beezy Preis.

“We start a freshman and a sophomore in the center and they’re starting two seniors who are a pair of the best players around.”

Chatsworth outshot the Eagles, 14-4. Chaminade goalie Kim Nelli finished with seven saves while Loewenstein needed to make only one save for the Chancellors.
