GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Mathews, Armendariz Spark University

Monique Mathews had 25 points and 17 rebounds and freshman Jerri Armendariz scored 12 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter to help University defeat Thousand Oaks, 63-51, in the semifinals of the South Coast Holiday Classic girls’ basketball tournament at University High Friday.

Raschelle Lawrence had 13 points and 11 assists for University (3-0), which will play Newport Harbor in tonight’s final.

Thousand Oaks (4-1) is ranked ninth in The Times San Fernando Valley edition poll.

In other tournament games:

Newport Harbor 50, Capistrano Valley 45 (OT)--Andree Verhulst scored 12 points for Newport Harbor (3-0), which outscored the Cougars, 7-2, in overtime to advance to the final.

Corona del Mar 47, Canyon 41--Jennifer Gardner had 25 points and 14 rebounds for Corona del Mar (4-1).

In the Ladycat Classic:

Brea Olinda 59, Riverside J.W. North 38--Marissa Bradley scored 18 points and Lindsey Davidson had 15 for Brea Olinda (6-1) in a semifinal.

In the Longview (Texas) girls’ basketball tournament:

Houston James Madison 67, Mater Dei 56--The Monarchs, ranked second in Orange County, fell behind, 20-9, after the first quarter. Freshman D.J. Day had 16 points for Mater Dei (1-1).

Melody Peterson scored only seven points, making three of nine field goals before fouling out early in the fourth quarter.

Madison (14-0) is ranked third in Texas.

In nonleague play:

Anaheim 36, Connelly 28--Stephanie Durrett scored 17 points for Anaheim.

St. Margaret’s 45, Cerritos Whitney 43--Jean Freeman scored 14 points for St. Margaret’s (3-0).
